PVC board has been introduced as a eco friendly, reliable, manageable, cost effective substitute for wooden plywood. Wooden ply cannot be used without the pasting of a laminate for protecting it from the nature's vagaries. There is no need to paste laminates in pvc ply.
PVC ply is an excellent material for nailing in contrast to other wood replacements as mdf and cement bonded particle board. Nails can be used a few mm from the edge without cracking the sheet.
PVC board can be sawed using ordinay short wood working hand saws with fine teeth. Jig saws and circular saws can also be used. Sheet upto 5mm thickness can be easily cut with a blade or stanley knife.
One of the many advantages of pvc board is that, it is easy to bend when heat is applied locally. A uniform temperature of 115' c to 130' c over the area to be bent gives best results. For right angle bend, a "v"- groove cut inside the bend is helpful. It is vital that the piece which has been bent remains held in place until it has cooled.
As the surface of pvc ply is smooth, it can be directly spray painted as compared to plywood which requires the laborious process of application of putty and sand paper before it can be painted. Pvc ply should be cleaned by soap water or nc thinner before applying the coat of paint (acrylic or pu (duco) as suitable.
Screws can be fixed in pvc ply on the face as well as the edges. Similar to wood the screw holding capacity of pvc ply is excellent but to get best results fully threaded screws should be used. No pre-drilling needs to be done. Pvc ply can be easily drilled with usual spiral metal bits. No bit sharpening procedure is required.
